On Life and Death
Mixed media installation with video, exhibited at Rosette Studios and Gallery, 2018
Materials include etched acrylic sheets with text, sunflowers I watched die as I grieved the death of my stepfather, dirt, cement blocks, printed books, CRT TV with video, headphones
To see it through – to bear witness – with slow seeing and attention – to share without abstraction or alchemy – the process of living in this world when someone you love no longer does.
ON LIFE AND DEATH is the progression of my perceptions bestowed through journal entries as I have learned new of the world through the passing of my stepfather Jeffrey Allen Westhoelter.
This is a practice of and an invitation to gather in the consciousness of being here in temporality, to potentially find form from the pain, and to recognize it all as evidence of our hearts working.
Video shots filmed throughout 2017 and 2018. The words “We must continue to feel” are etched into the CRT TV screen when on display (see images above).
